Short answer: Checking your eligibility with Instant Business Finance does not affect your credit score, because our 60-second check doesn't make a credit enquiry. A credit check happens only later, with your consent, if you choose to proceed. Multiple formal applications with different lenders in a short time can lower your score.
Eligibility checks vs credit applications
An eligibility check uses the information you give us, such as the amount, purpose, property and trading details, to see which loans fit. No credit enquiry is lodged. A formal application may involve a credit check, which appears on your file. We always ask first.
How to protect your score while shopping around
- Use no-enquiry eligibility checks first
- Only make formal applications when you're ready to proceed
- Avoid applying with several lenders at once
Does a business loan show on my personal credit file?
It can, especially if you're a sole trader or give a personal guarantee. Repaying on time can help your file over time.
Why several applications at once is the expensive mistake
The instinct when money is needed quickly is to apply everywhere at once and take whichever comes back first. It is the single most costly habit in this market.
Every formal application leaves a hard enquiry that stays visible for about five years. One is unremarkable. Four in a fortnight tells every lender who looks afterwards that you have been shopping hard and, by implication, that others may have said no. That changes how the next file is read, regardless of how strong it is.
The cheaper sequence is to check eligibility with each lender first — which makes no enquiry anywhere — work out which one actually fits, and then make one application. It is faster in practice as well, because a lender whose criteria you already meet moves in hours rather than asking for a fortnight of clarifications.
What actually shows up, and when
| What you do | Enquiry on your file? | Visible to other lenders? |
|---|---|---|
| Check eligibility online | No | No |
| Ask a lender what you could borrow | No | No |
| Receive a conditional offer | Usually no | No |
| Proceed to a formal application | Yes | Yes, for about five years |
| Draw down the loan | Depends on the lender and structure | Sometimes, as an account on file |
The line to watch is the fourth one. Ask any lender to tell you explicitly when they cross it, and do not let a conversation drift from an enquiry into an application without being told.
How to protect your score while you shop
- Check your own file first. Free from each bureau, and it tells you what lenders will see before they see it.
- Use eligibility checks, not applications, to compare. Several lenders, including us, make a conditional assessment without an enquiry.
- Ask before you proceed. “Does this step put an enquiry on my file?” is a fair question and a straight answer is a good sign.
- Apply once. Once you know which lender fits, commit to that one rather than hedging across three.
What a business credit file is, and how it differs from yours
Two files can exist and business owners routinely confuse them.
Your personal credit file sits with the consumer bureaus and records your own credit history: enquiries, accounts, repayment history and defaults. It follows you regardless of which business you run.
A commercial or business credit file sits with the commercial bureaus and records the entity: ABN or ACN details, trade payment behaviour, court actions, external administration and commercial enquiries. It is built from different sources, and trade suppliers report to it in ways that never touch your personal file.
Which one a lender looks at depends on how the loan is structured and who is on it. A facility to a company with a director guarantee can touch both. A loan in a personal name touches the personal one. This is worth knowing for a practical reason rather than an academic one: a business owner who checks only the consumer file and finds it clean can still be surprised by something sitting on the commercial file, most often an unpaid supplier account or a default a former partner left behind.
If you are about to apply for anything material, check both. Each bureau has to give you your file, and the process costs nothing.
Frequently asked questions
Does checking my eligibility leave a mark?
No. An eligibility check uses the information you give us and makes no credit enquiry. Nothing appears on your file.
How long do enquiries stay on file?
Credit enquiries generally remain visible for five years in Australia, which is why a cluster of them in a short window is worth avoiding.
Does being declined show on my file?
The enquiry shows. The outcome does not. A lender looking later sees that you applied, not that you were refused.
Do business loans show on my personal credit file?
It depends on the structure and the lender. A director guarantee or a loan in a personal name can appear; a facility to a company often does not.
Can I dispute something on my file?
Yes, and it is worth checking. A meaningful share of files contain an error, and the bureaus have a correction process that costs nothing.
Does it cost anything to apply?
No. There's no cost to apply or check your eligibility. All costs are set out in writing in your loan offer before you sign anything.
Will checking my eligibility affect my credit score?
No. Our 60-second eligibility check doesn't make a credit enquiry. A credit check is only done later, with your consent, if you decide to proceed.
