Need a business loan urgently? What to do in the next 24 hours

If you need a business loan urgently, pin down three things first: the real deadline, the exact amount and how the loan gets repaid. Then pick your lane. Cash-flow loans need 6+ months trading and can fund in as little as 2 hours after approval. Property-secured loans of $20,000 to $5M can fund in as little as 24 hours.

Short answer: If you need a business loan urgently, pin down three things first: the real deadline, the exact amount and how the loan gets repaid. Then pick your lane. Cash-flow loans need 6+ months trading and can fund in as little as 2 hours after approval. Property-secured loans of $20,000 to $5M can fund in as little as 24 hours.

The first hour: deadline, amount, exit

Before you ring anyone, write three things down. Nearly every urgent file that goes wrong skipped at least one of them.

  1. The real deadline. Not “this week”. The day and hour the money has to be in someone else’s account, and what happens if it isn’t. A 2pm Thursday settlement means cleared funds by Wednesday afternoon. A supplier who says “by Friday” may mean Friday at 9am. If the deadline is wages, the award or agreement sets payday, not you (Fair Work).
  2. The exact amount. The bill plus everything that lands with it: the GST, interest already accrued, the legal fee, the second invoice you know is coming next week. Borrowing $80,000 and then finding you needed $95,000 means a second application in a hurry, which is the slowest kind there is.
  3. The exit. How the loan gets repaid. A customer payment due on the 30th, a property sale, a refinance, the next few months of trading. Lenders look at this before almost anything else. If you can’t name it, that is worth knowing now rather than at 4pm.

Ten minutes on these three saves hours later, because they are exactly the first three questions any lender will ask.

Which lane are you in?

Urgent business lending runs in two lanes, and the lane decides almost everything else: how fast, how much and what paperwork.

If you own residential, commercial or industrial property with equity in it, property-secured business loans handle the larger amounts and don’t stall on overdue lodgements, ATO debt or a past default. If you don’t own property and you have traded for at least six months, the cash-flow lane is the faster of the two. Both are covered on our urgent business loans page, and fast business loans compares the products side by side.

Your hour-by-hour checklist

Run it in this order. It is the sequence that gets files funded on the day they were needed.

Hour 1

  • Ring every signatory. Every director, every trustee, every co-owner on the title. Confirm they can sign today and tomorrow, and that they know the loan is happening. A director on a plane is the most common reason a same-day file becomes a three-day file.
  • Do the eligibility check. Sixty seconds, no credit enquiry, and it tells you which lane you are in.

Hours 2 to 4

  • Cash-flow lane: connect your business bank account through the read-only link and have your ABN and photo ID ready.
  • Property lane: the current balance on your existing mortgage (from the bank app, not from memory), the property address, and the owners’ names exactly as they appear on the title.
  • Both lanes: the bill, demand or contract you are paying, and one sentence on the exit.

Hours 4 to 24

  • Read the offer and sign it the same day. Signing is electronic, so nobody has to drive anywhere, as long as they answer the phone.
  • Send the payee’s details early if the money is going straight to a supplier, the ATO or a settlement.

What slows an urgent file down

The lender is rarely the bottleneck. These four things are, and every one of them is visible on day one.

  • Awkward facts that arrive late. A default, an ATO debt, a second loan on the property nobody mentioned. None of them necessarily stops the loan — 61% of our borrowers had already been declined somewhere else. Discovering them at 4pm is what stops the clock.
  • Documents sent one at a time. Every round trip for “just one more thing” costs hours. Send everything at once, including the parts you would rather not.
  • A property that needs a physical valuation. Metropolitan property can usually be valued from a desk. A remote or unusual one needs someone to visit, and that adds days.
  • Starting late in the day. A 9am enquiry and a 4pm Friday enquiry are different jobs.

Our guide to how fast you can get a business loan goes through each one, with median funding times by loan type.

Why applying to five lenders at once backfires

With a deadline bearing down, the instinct is to apply everywhere and take whoever answers first. It nearly always makes things slower.

A full application usually triggers a credit enquiry, and every enquiry is recorded on your credit file. Five in two days is visible to every lender who looks, and it reads like a business that has been turned down four times, even if it hasn’t. You end up spending the afternoon explaining enquiries instead of getting the loan.

Do it the other way round. Use checks that make no credit enquiry to find the lane and the lender that fits, then make one proper application with everything attached. Our eligibility check makes no credit enquiry, and a credit check only happens later, with your consent, if you go ahead. More in does applying for a business loan affect your credit score.

Approval time is not money-in-the-account time

“Approved in an hour” and “money in your account in an hour” are different promises, and most advertising only makes the first one. Between approval and cleared funds sit the written offer, signing, settlement and the bank transfer itself. On a property-secured loan, settlement means the mortgage being registered, or in Victoria a caveat being lodged first.

So ask every lender the same question: how long from now until cleared funds in my account? Then ask whether that answer is their best case or their typical case. Ours, across 5,626 loans funded since 2012, is a median of 24 hours for cash-flow loans and 36 hours for property-secured loans, with 2 hours the fastest on record. Our same day business loans and 24-hour business loans pages set out what has to go right for each.

Weekends count too. Assessment and signing can happen any day, but settlement and clearing follow banking hours, so a Saturday enquiry usually funds on Monday.

If something is about to break — a garnishee, a settlement about to fall over, a supplier about to stop supply — go straight to emergency business loans.

When urgent money is the wrong answer, and when it isn't

Urgent finance is worth paying for when missing the date costs more than the loan does. A lost settlement, a contract that goes to someone else, a crew stood down for a fortnight — each of those has a number, and that number belongs next to the cost of the finance.

It is the wrong answer when there is no exit. Borrowing to cover a loss that will come back next month just adds a lender to the problem. It is also wrong when the creditor would give you time for nothing: the ATO offers payment plans, and plenty of suppliers will take a part payment and a firm date. If the business can no longer pay its debts as they fall due, speak to your accountant or a registered insolvency practitioner before you borrow anything.

If none of that applies and the date is real, find out where you stand now rather than at 4pm. Our 60-second eligibility check tells you which lane fits and roughly how fast each could fund, with no credit enquiry. Or ring 1300 863 711 and say the deadline first.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a business loan today?

Possibly. A cash-flow loan can fund in as little as 2 hours after approval if you have traded for 6+ months and connect your bank statements early in the day. Property-secured loans take as little as 24 hours.

Will checking whether I qualify hurt my credit score?

No. Our 60-second eligibility check makes no credit enquiry. A credit check happens only later, with your consent, if you decide to go ahead.

What is the smallest amount I can borrow?

Property-secured loans start at $20,000 and go up to $5M. Cash-flow loans are sized to your turnover and can be smaller.

My bank has already said no. Is it worth trying?

Yes. 61% of our borrowers had already been declined somewhere else. Banks assess financials and serviceability; property-secured lending is assessed on equity and the exit.

Do I need tax returns or financial statements?

Not for a property-secured loan, and overdue lodgements don't stop one. A cash-flow loan is assessed on your business bank statements rather than tax returns.

Does it cost anything to apply?

No. There's no cost to apply or check your eligibility. All costs are set out in writing in your loan offer before you sign anything.

Will checking my eligibility affect my credit score?

No. Our 60-second eligibility check doesn't make a credit enquiry. A credit check is only done later, with your consent, if you decide to proceed.
